Carolina Lio (b. Italy, 1984) is an art critic and independent curator based between Hong Kong, Milan and Berlin. She graduated at the University Alma Mater of Bologna in Science of Communication, with a thesis in Analysis of the visual communication. Her curatorial career started in 2004 working in the organization of the performance by Shozo Shimamoto during his solo show in Ca Pesaro, Venice. In the same year, she curated her first exhibitions as a professional curator.
She wrote articles for Flash Art, Exibart, New York Art Magazine and other art reviews, and in the last nine years she has then curated more than one hundred exhibitions for art galleries and several private and public institutions based mainly in Milan, Rome, Venice, Berlin and Hong Kong.
Among these, we can remind: at the Boston University and at Palazzo del Broletto in Como Lake; for the Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa in Vicenza, for Lu.C.C.A. Lucca Center of Contemporary Art in Tuscany; for Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice, for the ACCEA Armenian Centre for Contemporary Experimal Art in Yerevan and for the Centre of Contemporary Art Castello di Rivara in Turin. She is currently developing projects for the Guangdong Museum of Art in Canton, Hong Kong Arts Centre, L.A. Artcore Brewery Annex and IIC Italian Institute of Culture in Los Angeles among others.
Her curatorial activity has received several awards from important worldwide Institutions like the European Cultural Foundation of Amstedam, Open Society Institute and Soros Foundation in New York, ACOSS Cultural NGO in Yerevan (Armenia), Italian Government Ministry of Youth in Rome and Finnish Government Ministry of Culture in Helsinki.
Her research focuses on the direct relationship with young artists in order to create site-specific projects where is connected the physical space to the geographical and social territory without neglecting an international awareness. Her attempt is to draw a contemporary vision made by exchanges and comparisons between artists working in various parts of the world, trying to define a mapping of the contemporary practices with a particular eye to social issues and a question mark about the future.
